To have many guests can be tiring if they are demanding. The custom can also become a rivalry with others, so better a warm welcome than a good dinner. A Bible parable is told of a host who invites guests who will not come, so a servant is sent to compel the poor, lame, and anyone who will choose, to come. God is that host.
