Christian receives the mark of Christ, and a scroll, and meets Simple, Sloth and Presumption, all three asleep in chains. He tries to rouse them but without success. Hypocrisy and Formalist arrive without using the gate and argue that they are worthy. Christian climbs the Hill of Difficulty and finds Shelter where he sleeps and drops the scroll. Timorous and Mistrust try to discourage him from going on.
