The pair come to the River of Life and drink of it, and sleep in the field, resting for some days and then going on, the path becomes rocky, and Christian leads them into By-Path Meadow. They meet Vain Confidence and soon darkness and rain fall on them. This companion falls into a pit, and soon they meet Giant Despair who discourages, beats, imprisons and tries to kill them.
