Abram took as a wife Sarah’s maid Hagar who bore him Ishmael. Conflict between the two women caused Hagar to flee, but God sent her back, promising to make Ishmael a great nation. Later, God confirmed his covenant, changing Abraham and Sarah’s names to father and mother of many. Their son Isaac was the son of the covenant.
