The retribution of karma, that people are bound by their deeds, allows no place for forgiveness by the substitute of another paying these sins. Also, the balance scales concept does not allow a substitute. However, Christ claimed the authority to forgive sins when He healed a paralysed man and doing so, claimed to be divine.
