In a dream, Narrator sees a man in rags, leaving home, a book in his hand and a great burden on his back. The man, Christian, was distressed about his sin and God’s judgement. He meets Evangelist, who tells him to follow the light to the gate. Obstinate and Pliable try without success to stop him. Then Christian and Pliable fall into the Swamp of Despair.
